Adelaide
community comes together today, on World NET Cancer Day
Today is World NET Cancer Day, an annual event
designed to raise awareness of neuroendocrine (NET) cancers around the world.
In support of this global
campaign, the Unicorn Foundation, are hosting numerous fundraiser events
across the country, including one in Adelaide, to help raise awareness of neuroendocrine (NET)
cancers amongst the local community.
The sold-out event is
taking place at Piccoli Piatti Café, North Adelaide where 120 guests
will come together for the afternoon. Attendees will be treated to styling tips
from Adelaide stylist, Marilyn Little, given the opportunity to bid on numerous
silent auction items and will receive information on the often-misdiagnosed
symptoms of NETs.
Organised by the
Unicorn Foundation SA support group, local NET patients and carers, and Adelaide-based
NET specialist nurse, Jess Mercurio, the event promises to offer guests
entertainment, as well as education.
Unicorn Foundation CEO,
Simone Leyden comments, “Neuroendocrine (NET) cancers are frequently
misdiagnosed and often by the time patients receive a correct diagnosis the
cancer has spread to other organs.”
Leyden continues, “World
NET Cancer Day is about raising NET awareness amongst the community in the hope
of gaining earlier diagnoses. We hope this event helps to educate the community
about NET symptoms and encourages at least one person to speak to their doctor.”

Background Info:
The Unicorn Foundation is the only Australian charity at the forefront
of efforts to raise awareness and understanding of NETs, both within the
medical profession and the wider public. https://bit.ly/2BptA92
Approximately
7 in 100,000 Australians are diagnosed with NETs each year, a diagnosis
frequency similar to ovarian cancer.
Misdiagnosis
occurs in approximately 50% of patients, for many by the time they receive a
correct diagnosis the cancer has spread (Stage 4).
Neuroendocrine cancers occur
when there are changes in neuroendocrine cells (that regulate hormones), which
are present throughout the human body. More commonly located in the pancreas,
lungs, abdomen, reproductive organs and bowel, NET cancer symptoms can include,
weight loss, hot flushes, shortness of breath and diarrhoea. Neuroendocrine
Cancers (NETs) are frequently misdiagnosed with conditions such as: anxiety,
menopause, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) or diabetes.
NET Cancer Day is a global event held annually on
the 10th of November to raise awareness
of neuroendocrine cancers around the world. The event has been created to
encourage discussion around this rare form of cancer and draw attention to its
symptoms – which frequently mimic those of more common diseases such as IBS and
menopause.
