Active Against Asthma
If it
weren’t for physical activity former squash champion Alexia Clonda would not be
alive today.
Throughout
her squash career she suffered from steroid dependency, life threatening
asthma, in fact Clonda was the most severe asthmatic elite athlete at one time.
"Activity
and being fit gave me another avenue to fight asthma, without fitness I would
not have been able to cope with the asthma as I did. Activity was an absolute
must".
From
sporting stars such as David Beckham to musicans as Pink, Asthma does not
discrimination as to whom it affects.
Around
2.4 miliion Australians suffer from Asthma costing a staggering $28 billion in
direct and indirect costs per annum. Australia has the highest incidence of a asthma
per capita in the world.
This
chronic, life threatening disease is the major cause of children's admissions
to hospital and absenteeism from school, as 1 in 4 children and 1 in 7
teenagers suffer.
Former
squash champion Alexia Clonda's own battle with the disease has been the
motivation and driving force behind the founding of ATHLETES AGAINST ASTHMA specifically
for a BE AWARE-BE ACTIVE AGAINST ASTHMA campaign.
Clonda
believes that an Asthma Lifestyle Management program with the focus in areas
such as breathing exercises, nutrition, exercise, attitude, stress and other
lifestyle factors along with a Asthma Management Plan from your doctor.
Asthma
wasn't Clonda's only health issue, a spinal fusion, bone tumour, chronic
fatigue, lung damage, hip replacments, metal poisoning and a heart condition have
had Clonda at deaths door. " I have beaten them all, now it’s my mission
to help other Asthma sufferers and people with health issues get quality and
freedom back in there lives."
