New virtual heart rehab program tackles Australia's #1 killer - GMHBA

Heart disease is still Australia’s leading cause of death, but GMHBA is changing how recovery looks.

Australia’s largest regional not-for-profit health insurer has launched Healthier Heart at GMHBA, a fully funded, six-week virtual cardiac rehab program that’s set to transform recovery and reduce re-admissions.

In FY23 alone, GMHBA saw:

  • 6,800+ cardiac-related hospital admissions

  • $83.3 million in cardiac-related claims

  • 44% readmission rate within six months

Through a new partnership with Australian digital health company Cardihab, eligible GMHBA members can now access expert rehab from home, with personalised care and support from cardiac nurses delivered via telehealth and smartphone.

For regional Australians, where access to in-person rehab is often limited by distance and travel restrictions post-heart event, this program is a game changer, delivering expert care straight to their home, no matter their postcode.

It’s virtual care with real-world impact, breaking down geographic barriers and giving patients control over their recovery.
