Pyrocal named technology partner for innovative Canadian carbonisation project - Pyrocal
21 Jul 2025 10:30 AM
Homegrown Australian engineering company Pyrocal has been appointed as the preferred contractor to deliver its innovative Continuous Carbonisation Technology (CCT) in the Capital Regional District (CRD) of British Columbia, Canada, a national first for the North American country. The CCT system will be integrated into the CRD’s Residuals Treatment Facility at the Hartland Landfill, processing 100% of the region’s Class A biosolids and converting them into valuable biochar.
Pyrocal’s technology transforms biosolids and other organic materials into biochar, a charcoal-like product that enhances soil health by improving moisture and nutrient retention. The carbonisation process also reduces emissions and removes carbon from the atmosphere while significantly lowering biosolids disposal costs and landfill reliance.
The CRD’s long-term Biosolids Management Strategy, confirmed in March 2025, supports the integration of advanced pyrolysis technology, such as Pyrocal’s. The project will also explore market opportunities for biochar, with production costs expected to be competitive with the region’s current out-of-area disposal options.
Building on the success of Pyrocal’s delivery of Australia’s first continuous carbonisation facility at Logan Water’s Loganholme Wastewater Treatment Plant in Queensland, this project marks a major step forward in sustainable waste innovation. CRD Board Chair Cliff McNeil-Smith says it represents a significant milestone in the region’s commitment to progressive, environmentally responsible solutions.
“The advanced technology and infrastructure that Pyrocal provides will not only enhance our biosolids management capabilities but also contribute to long-term environmental benefits for our community,” he said.
Chair of the CRD’s Core Area Liquid Waste Management Committee, Chris Coleman, added that the technology sets a new benchmark for managing liquid waste efficiently and sustainably.
“From an Australian first to a Canadian first, we’re thrilled to bring our technology to the CRD,” said Pyrocal CEO Barry Croker.
“This project is a major milestone, not just for CRD and Pyrocal, but for global biosolids innovation. We’re proud to support the CRD’s forward-thinking approach, delivering lasting environmental and economic benefits to Vancouver Island and demonstrating our ability to deliver impactful solutions across borders.”
The CRD will now progress to the next phase of project planning, including refined financial analysis, public engagement, regulatory approvals, and First Nations consultation. Pyrocal will enter planning mode, with the project expected to commence early next year.
