ICONIC GLEBE PUB TRANSFORMED TO MAKE SYDNEY THIRSTY FOR REOPENING
Friday 8 October, 2021 - Sydney, Australia: The Glebe Hotel has been brought back to life with dancing mannequins and pub rock anthems, ahead of its official reopening when restrictions ease, on Monday 11 October.
Having spent the past three months closed due to the Sydney lockdown, The Glebe Hotel Owner, Zelman Nissen, with the help of Furphy, has set up his beloved local venue to look like the night at the pub we have all been missing - at full capacity, with the sound of classic anthems and punters chatting, along with vision of human figures dancing, drinking and having a good time through the windows.
“The hospitality industry has been in a world of pain with venues like ours sitting idle, waiting for the day when patrons could return. We’re counting down the moment until our doors reopen, and figured why not get the party started early plus gee-up Sydneysiders and lift their spirits ahead of Monday’s reopening,” said The Glebe Hotel Owner Zelman Nissen.
The pub’s entertaining transformation follows on from Furphy’s recent announcement to reward double-jabbed Australians with a free Furphy when pub and club doors safely reopen. The national ‘Vaxxed to the Pub’* initiative will kick off in New South Wales on 11 October.
Furphy brewer Lion will deliver 30,000 kegs of beer to venues across the state in time for re-opening on Monday, reuniting locals with the keg-fresh schooner they’ve been looking forward to for months.
“Who doesn’t love a great Aussie pub? We wanted to bring to life the spirit of Vaxxed to the Pub to remind Aussies just how much fun the pub can be once you’re fully vaccinated. It’s time to show some support for our hospitality mates by getting back to our local watering holes, and letting the cold ones and good times roll. Turn the taps on, the first round of refreshing Furphy’s are on us!,” said Lion Craft Director Malcolm Eadie.
From the silhouette of a mannequin drinking a Furphy through a window, to disco balls and body cut outs carving it up on the dance floor, the quirky installation replicates the familiar and truly missed scene of a pub looking alive on a Friday night.
“It’s awesome to see our establishment buzzing and going off once more! We’re ready with open (jabbed) arms to welcome Sydneysiders back - in real life that is,” continued Nissen.
The Glebe Hotel installation will run from 18:00 to 20:45 Friday 8 October. Those who are ready and raring for pub doors to reopen can check it out in person at 63 Bay Street, Glebe NSW 2037.

About Furphy, the beer:
Ever since Aussie troops gathered around Furphy water tanks in WWI to tell a yarn and pull each other’s legs, a tall story has been known as a “Furphy”. Believe it or not, the Furphy family still manufacture tanks in Shepparton, Victoria, the same as they’ve done for over 140 years. Today, we brew beer in them and continue that great Australian tradition of sharing yarns with mates. So pull up a pew for a Furphy or two. And remember, never let the truth get in the way of a good story.
